Discover Portogruaro: a walk through the city of the Lemene
Every Thursday morning
Portogruaro, known as the "Little Venice" by the writer Ippolito Nievo, is a charming town founded on the banks of the Lemene River, a calm and picturesque waterway.
Founded in the 12th century as a hub for collecting agricultural products from the lands ruled by the Bishop of Concordia, it became part of the Republic of Venice in 1420. This brought a strong architectural and cultural influence that shaped its urban atmosphere and made it the most important river port in the region.
Even today, its Venetian-style buildings, canals, and bridges make it resemble an inland version of Venice.
We will stroll through the streets and alleys of the old town, among its typical Venetian-style buildings.
After a guided introduction in Piazza della Repubblica and in front of the Town Hall, we’ll continue into the historic centre towards the ancient watermills.
The S. Andrea mills once powered the city’s economy and now represent one of its most picturesque corners.
We’ll pass under the third most leaning bell tower in Italy and visit the Cathedral of Sant’Andrea, famous for its frescoes, then continue through hidden alleys and charming little squares.
